Well shoot. So much for child-friendly, 'round here...my six year old daughter, my heart of hearts, my precious curly-locked fairytale lovin' sweetie...has type I diabetes.
Ever think you'd be in a situation where you were actually wishing for a urinary tract infection? All that thirst, and all that peeing, and yes, vomiting (ketones), and finally loss of weight (fat then muscles...is there any sugar in here?) And then those numbers, all proving true, so much for philosophy.
And she's six. Oh, I already said that. I meant to say, what kid in their right mind can get used to shots? Even if we find a prettier name to call them, like "your insulin". She's a toughie, though, like some one related to her, won't say who.
We're going to make the best of this situation, maybe join a support group (if there are any) and take it like the leaders we are. Taylor honey, I'm sorry to tell you, doctors orders, "you can never become an airline pilot, or gulp, join the military."
Don't worry, I'll always say, none of that's true. You can be ANYTHING YOU WANT, just as long as your not too busy leading the Diabetic Girl Scout troops.

oh man, that blows! i'm so sorry to hear that. is it the type of diabetes that people can grow out of?

Thanks guys. It's not the type they can grow out of, but it appears to be good timing technology-wise. Lots of innovations around the corner, I just know it.
Did find some studies where rats were cured of it by being vaccinated with a common tuberculosis vaccine (BCG). It depletes the abnormal immune cells that attack and destroy the insulin producing cells of the pancreas.
From what I can see, they've begun the human trials:

We may head to Mayo and find out if they know of anyone accepting children in the very early stages of the disease (insert prayers here).

First thank you for leaving a comment on my blog and welcoming me! Secondly, my b/f's sister has type one diabetes since she was little too, and just know that she is doing wonderful! And yes she can defiantly be anything she wants to be!
I am so sorry to hear about your little girl. I can only imagine how frustrated and angry you must be.

Oh darling... I'm sorry. Diabetes sucks monkey balls. Seriously. My best friend in the entire world was diagnosed at 5 years old. Her life HAS had some very hard times. It hasn't been easy, but she is THE MOST dedicated person I know. Nothing will stop her from doing what she wants. Including having children, getting her degree (in spite of going through a rough divorce, medical issues and caring for 2 young kids) and having a fabulous career/family/outlook on life.
Diabetes today is nothing like diabetes 20 years ago. The insulin pump has changed my friend's life. The freedom she has now, in comparison to toting hypodermic needles around, is 100 fold. If your daughter can get approved for one, give it a try.

I hate hearing about another kid getting diagnosed with diabetes. It sucks.
My daughter O has had type 1 for 11-1/2 years. She's 14 now and while it has been challenging (puberty - it WILL be hell, so stock up on your crutch of choice), it's allowed me to meet some wonderful people. The diabetes online community is big and dedicated and super helpful.
